Older adults are likely to have accumulated prescription and over-the-counter drugs that have expired or are no longer used. Leaving these drugs in drawers or boxes around the house is not a safe practice. Drugs that are no longer needed should be disposed of in a responsible and safe way. Once a year, the U.S. Department of Justice’s Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) sponsors a National Take Back Day to remind us to do so. This year that day is October 25. You can find a participating site which will take your unneeded drugs at https://www.dea.gov/takebackday. / Or you can take advantage of a local event sponsored by the San Mateo Elks Lodge, in cooperation with the San Mateo Police Department and take your drugs to the Elks Lodge at 229 West 20th Avenue in San Mateo between 10 AM and 2 PM on October 25. This information is brought to you by the San Mateo Age-Friendly Coalition. Contact agefriendlysanmateo@gmail.com if you would like to learn more about our work.
